Why are most american men circumcised?

As someone who has had a son and chose to get him circumcised, I would like to give an answer to this. My wife and I wrestled with this one for a long time. I am circumcised and, since becoming an adult, wish that my parents hadn't chosen to have me circumcised.

My wife and I have no religious ties and couldn't find any significant medical reasons for or against circumcision. In the end, we decided that it would serve our son best to give him whatever most of his peers would have. Whenever he reaches the age of sexual exploration, we didn't want for his partner to have any cause to say anything hurtful.

So, when it came time to make the decision, we asked the doctor what most couples are choosing these days. He said that circumcision is on the decline, but he would estimate that 70-80% of couples are still going with circumcision. That was a large enough percentage to make uncircumcised penises a rare sight among his peers.

So, we decided on circumcision. Honestly, it was one of the hardest decisions of my life and I hope that it serves my son well in his life.
