Why are WW2 games so damn popular?

Well, if you look at Totalbiscuit, in his video (link is below), he said on how much he hates modern military shooters.

Now, he specifically said about how the FPS genre has become more about strict story telling with linear gameplay mechanics as opposed to how the FPS was in the 90s with creative games, huge maze-like maps, endless and creative enemies and a character that runs at super speeds.

He does have a huge point because this was a time before videogames were more about gameplay, not story, before Half Life came into being and changed gaming forever. But he is also kinda wrong.

Granted, modern military shooters are very linear sometimes when endless cutscenes and plenty of generic gameplay mechanics and guns which behave the same. But this is for the sake of realism and portraying characters more human.

While he does have a point that certain gameplay mechanics seem to be more dumbed down but then again, that is the cost when it comes to making modern military shooters. There is not much room for creative and original weapons with unique mechanics and gameplay strategies of their own because like real life, there are merely the same.

But anyway, many people are begging for Activision to go back to the WW2 era because they think that this futuristic stuff has gone out hand because they have been repeating it over and over again.

They have a point since come on, COD is merely the same game. But they do seem to have a lot of creativity, including the newest trailer where you go to space.

And somehow, every time there is a WW2-themed game, people seem to take interest. Like Wolfenstein, even though it was set in an alternate 60s, people liked it. Or Sniper Elite, or Company of Heroes 2, and so on.

And yes, you are right. Plenty of futuristic themed games are pretty popular like Starcraft, Mass Effect, or Warhammer 40k. But somehow, when it comes to COD, people are getting sick of it. Maybe because they have tried to make this new future setting for almost 4 times now?
