Is Area Manager Even Worth It?

Do not take it. I had the exact same issue. I have 12 years experience applied for Ops manager and was offered an Area Manager. Total comp package came to $95k.

I spoke with the recruiter and politely declined telling them I thought I was more qualified for the Operations manager role. After two seconds of looking at my resume he agreed. I had to go through the interview process again now with 4 Senior Managers and was offered an Ops Manager role. $150k per year plus a relocation package to the city I wanted to be in. He asked me where would be my ideal city and they made it happen. I start next month. Do not settle they are hiring like crazy.
