Atheists of Reddit, what made you an atheist?

Im Agnostic now but when I was younger I was Atheist.

It hit me in the 7th grade. Entering Jr. High introduced me to a number of different religions I wasn't familiar with: Sihk, mormon, Jehovah Witness, Atheists, and a few others that made me think... why so many different religions? Are their beliefs any better than mine or from each other? I kicked this idea around for awhile until we covered Medieval History. I noticed a trend. Some guy had a vision from god, a war broke out and people ended up with a new religion (I understand there was more to it). Then I figured out my parent's religious views could have been influenced by some dude with a sword and not from some spiritual influence.

This is how a 12 year old me started to kick around the idea of the existence of god and the purpose of religion. My views have changed tremendously from then and developed myself more into an Agnostic than Atheist. I figured something did create us but something far greater than a god as we know him to be. The idea of a god is too simple and for us being simple minded creatures (back before the study of sciences, before we questioned our surroundings), a god provided answers and made sense of things we couldn't.

With this being said, I wouldn't want to live in a world without a god or religion. Too many people rely on the idea of religion to get by in life. As long as they don't tell me I'm wrong or hurt others for the name of god, Im OK with it.
