Balance was better on the first listen, Amnesty is better on the second.

I thought the dramatic surprises near the end of Balance were nice, but what I really loved about it is the relaxed atmosphere. The group was a lot more loose with making references and breaking the fourth wall, and it allowed them to keep their improv humor front and center.

When the mood is so lighthearted, you don't feel so critical about plot continuity and pacing and all of the little details that make dramas tight and good. You're just laughing along until a big story beat jumps up and catches your attention.

Nowadays I think they've tried to hone in on the drama and storytelling elements, which stifles the improv and really shines a spotlight on any shortcomings in the story department.

The boys have over a decade of improv comedy experience, and very very little dramatic storytelling experience. So naturally their drama skills will be limited. I personally like it best when they let their hair down and goof off in exotic fantasy settings.
