Because of technology recently is so high speed, is it really affecting our attention span?

I wasn’t quite sure what you meant by ‘high-speed’ but assumed (perhaps wrongly) you meant ‘ubiquitous’ - as in, the availability of technology.

Most people in the developed world own a smartphone now, which means the majority of us carry a personal computer in our pockets. When bored, inactive or waiting in a queue, we can often be seen dipping into our pockets to reach for our smartphones.

Notifications of news-updates, friend requests, messages, etc., all require our attention (and we so often give them our immediate attention.) Add to this the addictive qualities of social media (treating us to notifications and rewarding us with ‘likes’) it's harder than ever to resist the lure of our devices. Anecdotally we've all seen (or been) the friend who is not listening and instead checking a fact, or browsing facebook etc.

Of course, technology is saving us lots of time, too. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that what’s really changing is what we give our attention too.
