Thank you. I've recently been struggling with how to process a conversation I had with a neighbor at a pub a while ago. We were coincidentally sitting next to eachother at pub when we realized we lived in the same building, and started to have a conversation.. It began as the regular chit chat any two people would have at a bar while sightly buzzed.. I'm caucasian and he was of Iraqi heritage, but had lived in Canada for most of his life.. Our ethnicities had not even been a topic of discussion when he told me that I need to check my white privilege... I didn't know where this statement came from, but I could tell that he hated me just because I'm white. I was baffled by this statement, and asked him what I could possibly do to make things right.. he had no answer.. what bothered me most is that I'm a sixth generation Canadian, and proud to live in a country with a mosaic culture and a history of welcoming and defending those seeking salvation.. and a safe place to live. As a white male I'm supposed to have it all layed out for me on a silver platter, but I don't. It's taboo for me to be offended by someone being racist towards me.. racism is racism, and no one deserves to be judged by the colour of their skin.. even caucasians.
