Brazil was not what I thought it would be...

Yeah, I wouldn't wish to be a "white" woman in a crowd in some places. That applies to just about all of the middle East, eastern Turkey (plus western Turkey, to a lesser extent), and parts of north Africa that I've been too as well (such as Egypt); or at least it did when I last visited these places, and I very much doubt attitudes have entirely changed for the better yet. But I'm not a white woman, thank the Lordy...

I wouldn't discourage female travelers from going to any of these places - anywhere at all, in fact - but they need to be self aware; respectful of local practices, dress, and customs; and preferably not travel alone. As much as it's a red flag to a feminist bull these days, it's wise to actively avoid situations where you potentially put yourself at risk. That's just common sense, not sexist. I frequently take my own advice, and I'm ex forces...

It is what it is. No point in getting on a high horse and taking offence at everything, otherwise you'll have an awful experience and would be better off staying at home in your comfort bubble. It'll change, and that will arise mostly from internal pressures, not external preaching. It's very presumptuous to assume that "we" in the west know better anyway, and nobody likes to be lectured or dictated to by an idealistic teenager who thinks they know everything.

Who knows, a solo female traveler reading this may go abroad and contribute in changing things for the better. Many do. However, don't expect to leave (especially) a US college/uni overly PC echo chamber environment, in a country where positive discrimination abounds, and be surprised when India, Africa, or the middle East are nothing like what you've been used to for a decade or three. If you're a delicate little flower then you're not going to like it. I wouldn't expect to see "liberating slut walks" widespread in countries like this any time soon. Lucky them.

When in Rome, don't parade around in a Wicked Weasel bikini - or something like that. You can't immediately change the attitudes of others, but you're not required to encourage them and subsequently take offence when the expected happens.
