Most shocking things you have seen while traveling?

There are a few.

But the one that for some reason popped into my head the fastest (don't know why, because it's random among several which were equally shocking) were the goats in Syria.

Was driving across the desert in Syria with my dad for a holiday (before the war). My dad was in awe that there were heards of goats in the middle of the desert with no vegetation. Was so bizarre because there was nothing for them to eat. My dad kept joking that he's never seen goats thrive so much on eating rocks.

Then, as we were driving down the highway, we saw a herder separate a single goat from the rest of the herd. The herder began beating the goat like mad, punching it, kicken it, throwing rocks at it, and hitting it with a giant stick. The goat stumbled a lot, and kept trying to run away, but the herder kept chasing and beating it. My dad asked me what the hell that was about. I wasn’t sure, so we watched as the herder continued to chase it far from the herd. I could eventually see red blood running from the goats neck.

After taking a major beating and trying to run away, the goat eventually collapsed. The herder picked it up, threw it over his back, and carried it to a tent. It then occurred to me... he must have slaughtered it halal. As the goat was bleeding from the neck, the herder beat it as much as he could t force it to continue to run in order for the blood to keep pumping and to drain as it circulated. And that was that.

My dad and I just kind of watched in a bit of stunned silence. I had never seen it done quite that way before (it’s usually not done that way, at least not in more populated areas - trust me).
