Carly Rae Jepsen – The Loneliest Time

I've listened for two weeks or so. I think it's an interesting 8/10 for now. I expect it will age well like her other albums.

There's no question it's uneven. Sometimes it's like a mixtape. Silly for Pitchfork to knock the album based exclusively on flow. They gave The Life of Pablo a 9.5/10 and that was truly a 'throw everything at the wall and see what sticks' kind of album. Pretty sure they also gave Drake's mixtape rap album an 8/10 before they decided they no longer liked Drake.

A few observations:

  1. Highs are higher than Dedicated. Surrender My Heart, Talking to Yourself, Western Wind (yes), Bad Thing Twice, The Loneliest Time, Anxious, and Keep Away are among Carly's best tracks.
  2. Some of the other tracks are 'mid' for Carly but they're interesting. I see the comparisons between Go Find Yourself and Joanne... it's a solid ballad. No Thinking Over the Weekend reminds me of Don't Hate California After All. Far Away and Sideways don't make an impression.
  3. Joshua Tree, Bends, and So Nice are some of my least favorite Carly tracks in the last 7 years. Joshua Tree needed a better chorus -- the outro is great...
  4. Some of the comments about flow are fair... Shooting Star is dope, but it's sonically jarring between Bad Thing Twice and Go Find Yourself.

Better than Midnights, in any case!
