Gamescom post-Blizz Stream Discussion - World of Warcraft: Legion

Are these things perfect? No, they're not, but they're the way it is and it works out.

I think you're not quite getting my objection, because it doesn't work out. The issue isn't about story consistency – as a player we make these concessions all the time. That stuff is no big deal. I'm talking more about the general storytelling design. The issue revolves around the fact that up until Wrath, the world you existed in was the same world as everyone else. In Vanilla entire servers had to work together to collect resources to open Anqiraj. In BC, you are one of many there to defeat Illidan. In WotLK you are part of the massive army fighting the Lich King. You are part of a faction made up of many players and together you go on to conquer something.

But starting with alternate phasing in WotlK and Cata, continuing in MoP with the farm and taken to its extreme with garrisons in WoD, your connection to other players within the world completely broke down.

During MoP, this began to manifest in the questing as well where there was a slow transition so that the experience became more player character focused where you as an individual became some special snowflake. You're the Warchief's vanguard. You're the special hero that gets Wrathion's special tools. In WoD, you're the commander/general of the horde/alliance. But if you're the special snowflake, what about the hundreds/thousands of other players? In order to buy into the experience, you have to accept that they don't exist.

Give the lore team a chance. Can't be worse than time travel.

Can't be worse than absolute garbage? That's not really something to get hyped about.

Also remember all the cosmetic options.

This isn't supposed to be Disney Princess Dress-up... I don't care about cosmetic stuff. I mean everyone has always basically used the same weapons (whatever was BiS). The issue is that you're cheapening the lore. Where once there was these epic/legendary figures in the WoW universe (Thrall, Tyrion, Jaina, Tyranda, Malfurion, etc.) now they've been reduced to just a bunch of nobodies.
