Cat is not happy with an inflatable cone. Any advice?

I adopted this cat off the street in January because he was sick. I had him neutered, vaccinated and tested for fiv/fel, etc.. Since January he has been on 4 weeks of antibiotics and has had 3 blood tests. The first one was drawn in a front leg, and healed up fine.

Last Monday he had another blood test and this time it was drawn in his neck. Unfortunately they missed a vein and caused a little bit of razor burn.

Since he has so much hair and fat cheeks, I didn't notice the bald spot until about Friday, and here is how it has progressed in a week:

not really in order. the smaller the bald spot, the older the picture. I tried wrapping it tight in gauze 3-4 times, but every time it resulted in him getting his teeth or tongue stuck in it. Can't leave him alone with that. Tuesday I took him for his final blood test, and had another fel/fiv test done -- negative! His other blood work was good, so he shouldn't need more antibiotics. Was given some strong antibiotic/moisturizing salve so that it won't become infected.

Got a cone on tuesday from petsmart. It was the smallest cone available and he was not able to eat, drink, or get into the litter box with it.

Today an inflatable cone arrived, but he is so goddamn depressed with it on, even 8 hours later.

between tuesday and today, the bald spot was even bigger because there isn't anything I can do other than wrap it in gauze to keep him from licking it.
