There are politics involved in playing for the national team too though. If it was purely based on the best players getting called up, it might make sense to hold that view.

Imagine you’re someone like Tomori who was a key player for Milan in a title win. You see players being called up who aren’t even playing for their club side. Why should he show us any loyalty at all? Same for any midfielders not being picked over Mount and Phillips who aren’t getting regular games, or in Mount’s case he isn’t good enough.

If I’m getting left out most of the time for inferior players then why would I put country over club?

Let the players decide what’s important to them. If they don’t think it’s an honour to be called up that’s their choice.
