Children of "not doctors", tell us what it was like.

My Mom is a tech in the ER, my Dad was in the military. First person in my family to graduate college. My sister got into med school before I did though, she's several years younger than me.

Grew up middle class in a rural area. Wanted to be a doc since I was a kid but tried a bunch of other stuff before I ended up actually applying myself. Took the MCAT while active duty military, did an SMP and then matriculated this past August.

Always knew how to work hard, this is the first year I haven't had a job since I was probably 12 or 13 since my Dad also owned a construction business. But I had stereotypical "gifted kid" syndrome so I didn't know how to apply that work ethic to academics until I was in my mid 20s.

Worked out for me though, I wouldn't change anything. I couldn't do what my classmates are doing at 23, would have absolutely squandered that opportunity due to immaturity.
