So by your logic 1 in 1,000,000 or so might do something bad with one, so we'd better punish everyone. I'm surprised your country hasn't banned knifes, cars, planes, electricity, cigarettes, water, running, walking, biking, overeating, etc, etc. Every one of those is statistically more likely to hurt or kill you. My whatsap analogy is 100% legitimate. A few nefarious people use it as a tool to hide their identities and governments around the world want to take any form of encryption away from every citizen.
A few nefarious people shoot some innocent people and everyone that has no understanding whatsoever says that we should ban all firearms from every citizen. Nobody can be too blind to make that connection.
The discussion hasn't gone here yet, but judging by the amount of downvote my last comment got I'd better add my feelings on the matter. I have fully supported better regulation of firearms for decades. Background checks need to be better and people should have certifiable training before they are allowed to purchase one. Currently I could walk into a store looking for a shirt and see a pistol in sale, decide I want it, and walk out with it 10 minutes later. That's way too easy. Few pistols have hunting uses, so make that a week long hold. Rifles and shotguns should be regulated based on their sporting potential.
Scrapping a system that only needs some improvement in favor of an outright ban is literally contrary to something this country was founded upon. Those of us that need firearms for protection from wildlife don't need to suffer, those of us that need them to feed our families don't need to suffer, those of us that cannot defend ourselves otherwise don't need to suffer, those of us that would live in fear without one don't need to suffer. Banning outright has never fully solved a countries problems, be it the UK, Australia, or Japan. Better regulation can and will work once it's put into place. Downvote me all you want, but you're not thinking about the tens of millions of people that will be hurt if you got your way.
