If he identifies as non-binary then there should be plenty of other sources beyond his lawyer or his word. Friends, family, coworkers, etc... should be aware of him previously identifying as non-binary.

Journalists and reputable news organizations aren't mouth pieces. They should check their facts and report WITH CONTEXT. The headline shouldn't be "the shooter identifies as non-binary." The headline should be "Since his arrest the shooter has claimed to identify as non-binary but we cannot substantiate this with any outside source. All indication at this time is that the shooter only started identifying as non-binary post arrest."

THAT would be good journalism.
