Conservative ideology in social work

I consider myself moderate, but more conservative leaning. I’m starting the BSW program next year. Growing up in a super conservative household, then having more liberal friends growing older, I try to see both perspectives. I’ve seen people take advantage of and abuse the resources they’ve been given to help them, and I’ve seen people who are jumping through hoops to get help they desperately need. My intention in joining this field is to find a balance between the two sides and provide access of resources for those who genuinely need it, and limit the abuse of resources.

When I say abuse of resources I mean people who use government money to get their hair and nails done but have no food at home to feed their children. People who buy their four year olds cell phones to keep them occupied, instead of paying the water bill. I’m talking about people like my sister. And I’m gonna stop now before I say more than I should.

I LOVE helping people who deserve it, who appreciate it and actually want to better themselves and their lives. I’m willing to do anything I can to help someone improve their current situation, until I see that they’re not putting in the effort for help themselves. That’s why I’m going into social work.
