Cop Claims He Can’t Remember Killing Two People After Climbing On Hood Of Car, Firing 15 Rounds

Yeah my experience is different.

Prior to OIF, my platoon leader put 2 rounds thru the hood of an SUV that was pacing our convoy. That incident was a small blurb in international news and made it all the way up to presidents daily briefing.

During the invasion, I saw a family of four turned to charcoal because they turned down the wrong street. I wish we had the luxury of more discretion but.. it was a tense time.

09APR2003 in Baghdad, under the sabres, an old man with an odd gait walked through our perimeter. He ignored commands to halt, charging weapon etc. Nobody would have questioned using lethal force in those circumstances, but since I was already in the kill radius of a suicide bomb and my buddies had standoff/cover, I let him approach.

He was just an old veteran who lost his arm, leg and eye fighting against Iran. He made a difficult and very risky walk just to thank us. So I'm kinda glad I didn't kill him, even tho no one would have questioned or cared.

I don't know what it's like to be a cop. I have seen videos of police seething with rage while beating unconscious victims, firing wildly injuring bystanders and other officers. I've read all the stories- the girl on the couch killed during no-knock, the guy killed during a no-knock on the wrong house, the negligent discharge to the back of the head while cuffing. I know these are rare occurrences, but the DAs and courts have reacted with one consistent message:

A police officer who is afraid, or consumed by rage, or confused, and accidentally or intentionally shoots a suspect, bystander or other police officer is given the benefit of every doubt. Actual reality is secondary to whatever imaginary scenario created during (or after the fact) can be used to justify deadly force.

And even if a punishment is announced to quell public outrage, it is almost always quietly reversed later.

This Cleveland case is interesting because the city might actually feel this one LEO crossed the line. Until now, there's been almost no proof there might even be one. But, you know, wait a year and see what actually happens. My guess? nothing.
