Could have just bought a PC

What would be the fun in that though? You can relive your youth and get the experience of playing those games much better from the actual machine. You don't get the tactile feeling of putting the cartridge in the slot, or the hand ache from the crappy joystick that came with your Atari VCS.

I can play my PS1 games on my PS3 but even though I can use the HDMI output, which makes it 'better' it's not the same as when I had the PS1 and had the experience of using the real hardware.

People who collect consoles (or anything) in this way are not just doing it in order to play the games, it's because the hardware itself has value to them as well.
