"Of course you can play as a female."

Didn't you see Quiet in the new Metal Gear game?

I had not, but I agree that it's very odd to have someone dressed like that in a warzone. I don't necessily believe that the sexualization of a character mean 100% poor character design, since there really are people who are very sexual in the real world, though the clothes are still questionable.

I don't want to make any blanket statements about Quiet herself since the game isn't out yet, thus, her character unknown. Or, at least, I trust MGR series enough to not immediately claim poor character design.

Except you're not the only ones

This was my point when I said that. You can view most offensive things as not being so bad when you say it's just a small group that jokes about it, but the matter stay the same. It's an issue, no matter how small the group is that says it.

whenever the industry tries to change, people rally to whine about the evil feminists

How many people were crying evil feminists with Lora Croft? How many people cry evil feminists when a new IP shows up with a strong female protagonist? Doesn't feel like many.

"Recore" was just announced at E3 and it looks good and it has a female lead. Judging by what you said, and they way you said that, we should expect to see resistance around that title just being of it being a female lead. So, I guess we can test that pretty soon.

Mortal Kombat altered slightly the female character designs to make them less skimpy and fanboys freaked the fuck out, as if every damn game in the universe needs to be Dead or Alive.

The thing with fanboys is, they don't like change in their games, especially when that change comes to established, reoccurring characters. They freak out about anything. It ain't right, and of course it got more exposure because the fanboys wanted to keep that level of unrealisticness, but I think people would also be upset if changes had occurred to one of the male characters. Which goes back to my point about new IPs.

What do you mean? How are those things not related?

I don't believe that poor character design automatically means the objectification of a gender. The two can go hand and hand more often than not, but it's not always the case.

The industry is changing. The scales are being put on more even levels. There's still a long, long way to go, but it is going, even if a large portion of the gaming community wants to fight it. If you don't believe me, start watching E3. There's ton of new games that are coming out with vital females roles in them. Something that may not have happened a few years ago.
