When men try to argue male power fantasies are meant to be fanservice for women

I would say you/the post you're talking about have a great point in the beginning. What's fair is fair and I don't think it makes sense for people who like bikini type outfits for female characters to complain about the same type of outfits for male characters.

That being said, though, while it's fair to say that some women are not into that sort of thing, it's also fair to say some are, so they do still have a point there with characters like Kratos being fanservicey for women too rather than being fanservice for men only. And the same goes for many women in games too, they're not just fanservice for men.

I also think that when there's a "power fantasy" situation in a game it's usually because of the gameplay which makes you feel super strong/powerful/like a good, and I don't think the character design is necessarily the main part of that. For example, I'm a huge fan of Doom, and Doom games are widely known for being a power fantasy type of thing, but it's because you're literally ripping demons apart with your bare hands and such, not because you play as a buff dude, and with it being an FPS, you don't exactly even get to see the buff dude a whole lot which does still not stop me from endlessly simping for the doom guy :)

And as you can probably tell from that last bit, personally, as a woman, I absolutely love playing as huge buff dudes, or having huge buff dude NPCs. And I also love playing as, or interacting with, strong and fit ladies in games. Very simply put, I like all the playable characters to be strong and attractive, and I most certainly don't mind the limited amount of clothing on some of them (Kratos being a pretty good example). Also I do still like some more neat/clean looking male characters too so I definitely understand that as well.

Also, I do still absolutely agree/believe that some guys will look at these buff characters and be like "i wish i was that buff" or just be happy about their character being all buff and strong. But this is comparable to the reactions/feelings of many women when playing as strong and awesome ladies in games too. Just because the people who share the character's gender admire them or look up to their design and/or personality as some sort of ideal, doesn't mean that this same character can't at the same time be fanservice for others too.

So having all this in mind, I would say that both the buff dudes and the attractive ladies in games are fanservice for anyone who's into that sort of thing, and it's not limited to just men/just power fantasies. And the buff dudes having very limited clothing or having random, seemingly unnecessary shirtless scenes most certainly isn't there to impress the (straight) guys. The guys would have been satisfied with the cool powerful personality. The girls (who happen to be into that) get to enjoy the muscles. Other girls, who are not into that, get to enjoy the more neat looking male protagonists in other games. And the same goes for the cool girl characters in games with unnecessarily revealing clothing. The "cool powerful girl" bit is there for us girls to enjoy, and then revealing clothes are there for the guys to enjoy.
