Cover Letter

Hi,

I'm in the UK, originally from South Wales but I'm studying at UCL.

It would be great to have your input, especially from a UK perspective (few and far between in r/gis). I'm using this as a template for applying to graduate schemes at the moment. Namely Arup, Atkins, Jacobs, Mott Mcdonald etc. I plan to add a section for each of the job adverts / companies. I'll paste it below:

Dear ___________ (if no name, XYZ Company Hiring Manager),

I would like to express my strong interest in the ______ position advertised on the/_____’s careers page. My experience and skills are highlighted in the enclosed CV (if required to put cv in).

The knowledge I have gained through studying MSc Geographic Information Science at University College London compliments the professional, hands-on experience I have gained through multiple internships and a year working as a GIS Technician.

As a proficient user of commercial software such as ArcGIS and QGIS, coupled with significant exposure to database management and programming languages, I have been able to successfully apply my knowledge to many professional and educational projects to optimise geospatial and business workflows.

I am confident that the application of my technical knowledge and experience can only enhance your organisation. I look forward to an opportunity to discuss how I might best serve the needs of <company name>.

Thank you for your time and review of the enclosed CV.

Sincerely,

Cory (surname).

Again, thanks for looking into this for me. It's nice to get the opinion of someone who has recently been in the same sort of position.

Also, was the portfolio of the maps you created in university? or did you make some specifically for your portfolio. Have you ever thought of making it an online portfolio?

Thanks again for your help!

Cory
