Swiss neutrality is a myth that was invented post 1945 to legitimize that Switzerland has turned away Jewish refugees at their borders, but let Nazi gold in. The obvious opportunistic and cowardly behaviour of the Swiss government had to be explained somewhat, especially with the amazing boom in international tourism enjoyed by Switzerland in the 50s and 60s. "Swiss neutrality" was a concept used by the Vienna Congress in 1815 where Switzerland was basically ordered to become a kind-of demilitarized buffer zone. The Swiss did not voluntarily agree to this. It took almost 100 years until this "neutrality" became a major business model in Switzerland when banking laws turned it into a financial haven. As late as the early 20th century, Swiss families used to send their children into servitude to German farmers ("Schwabenkinder") because they couldn't feed them anymore at home. It was only after WW II that Switzerland wholeheartedly embraced the idea of "eternal neutrality" to retroactively explain their role during the war and ensure the flow of money and tourists into their country.
