Daily Roundtable for August 30, 2019

Hello fellow Marylander! I grew up in St. Mary's county and my parents still live there and I've noticed the same thing.

Even during the 2016 primaries I noticed Trump had a lot of signs and support - Maryland as we all know is extremely blue, so the red areas in Southern Maryland and Western Maryland tend to be a trumpier brand of red in my experience out of frustration.

Now? (Almost) nothin'. I've seen exactly one "Keep America Great" sign in the extremely red Clements while I've seen quite a few bumper stickers/signs for Warren and Bernie in Leonardtown which is more purple.

For everyone else:

Southern Maryland has long been a Red stronghold, outside of Charles county which as a large minority popation.

It swung hard left in 2018 (outside the Governor's race), confirming what I've noticed on the ground. Cardin almost won in Calvert and held his Challenger to 52% in St. Mary's. Hoyer basically tied in St. Mary's and WON Calvert. We flipped a legislative race as well in Lexington Park. That tax bill capping State and Local dedications did NOT play well in Maryland and the Mortgage interest cap didn't help either given how expensive real estate is here.

Obviously signs and ground reports mean nothing officially, but it can be a useful proxy for enthusiasm which was key to us having the advantage in 2018. And while Southern Maryland is just a small slice of America, trends in one corner tend to be correlated nationaly.
