Why do/don't you believe in God?

I try to keep an open mind, so I'd say I'm agnostic, but I do feel the concept of God has too many flaws. From a realist's view the world is a very traumatic place. Many of us here may live our sheltered first world lives but the truth is kids are starving to death as you read this, some innocent person has probably just been murdered, horrific diseases and illness continue to cause suffering, global power lovers control people against their will, animals are being wiped out because of us, and in general we are provoking much harm to the planet.

From what religion suggests God is this 'all loving' being and we are blessed to be alive. I can't comprehend what kind of god lets this kind of suffering in the world happen, how can you say a child (for example) is loved by god when he's born into poverty and dies a few days later because he/she had no food? How can you say that innocent person accused of rape and burned alive by a village mob is loved by God and blessed with life?

Then there's the time in which the religious books were written. The bible for example is thousands of years old, written in a time where witchcraft was thought of as real and the world was supposedly flat. People could believe anything, say anything, and someone could just write it down. Not to mention the edits made to the text over the years, a story changes drastically when it's passed from person to person.
