ECE majors and graduates: What was/is your extracurricular life like?

I enjoyed my first two years a lot and didn't worry about extracurriculars besides doing well in classes. Did a lot of social events, made friends, tried a lot of hobbies and activities. Didnt have time later so I'm glad I did that. Made friends I have 6 years later. Learned how to talk to people and make friends with strangers who had really different background than me.

Focused on projects and got an internship once I had some experience from classes in my 3rd year. Did some things on my own to find what I was interested in before applying for internships. Played with FPGAs, microcontrollers, wrote some software, played with designing some simple boards and building toy systems. Found I really enjoyed microcontrollers and C programming. Did a few projects in that area that I could talk about and got an internship writing SoC peripheral drivers, turned into a job.

Find your interests now while you have free time. Take risks, try a bunch of stuff and see what you like. Then direct your senior classes to an area you like and try to do projects in that area.

Students who are passionate, well spoken, and knowledgeable about a relevant domain stand out. Most people don't even have that when they graduate.
