Besides for this, you can do one or the other. You can also do both (see periodized strength programs). A great linear periodized strength program would be Candito 6-Week Cycle. I recommend that program to anyone looking to get stronger while putting on mass. But there are many others as well.

You may find you need more Hypertrophy training incorporated in your strength training to get stronger. You may find you need more strength in your hypertrophy training to put on more lean muscle mass. The point is, you need to decide what you want for yourself and what you want to achieve. There are tools available to help you reach those, but you must decide what the fuck you want.
