ELI5: Why can some people still function normally with little to no sleep and others basicly fall apart if they can't get 7 to 12 hrs?

WAYS TO SOLVE YOUR SLEEP PROBLEMS Genes do explain a lot, but if anyone else is like me and you are one of those people who needs a shit ton of sleep, you are probably dying for some sort of solution to this problem.

I need about 9 hours of sleep to feel fully charged in the morning. This is annoying because I feel like much of my life is being wasted sleeping. After my girlfriend pointed out how I was gasping for air while sleeping on a ride home, I decided to do some research research my sleep problems and try to find a solution (I never really accepted genes dictating my sleep).

My Findings: I figured I must have sleep apnea. I looked at my tonsils, one is enlarged. I talked to my doctor, saw an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist). I apparenly have a deviated septum, and enlarged turbinates as well. This explains my trouble breathing through my nose and why I always breathe through my mouth at night. They said they can fix all of this if I go to a sleep center and get my apnea diagnosed. I spent the night in a sleep center and they didn't find any signs of apnea, just some snoring. GREAT, I thought. I was prescribed nasonex to help me breathe through my nose better. I also learned how to sleep on my side. I didn't actually do that tennis ball shit, but that's what the sleep center suggested.

I continued doing my own research because I'm not going back to that sleep center (the bed sucked, had wires coming out of my head, people watched me sleep; it was terrible sleep!) to try and get diagnosed again. I realized I've been smoking weed a lot and I always wake up with a terrible taste in my mouth. Turns out weed/cigarettes/alcohol all affect your breathing when you sleep. I cut all of them out and now I barely snore anymore according to my girlfriend.

I've also been looking into nootropics. All of you should as well. If you have trouble falling asleep, get yourself some melatonin at the very least (you can get it anywhere like Wal-Mart). I don't touch sleeping medications because they have many side affects and I don't want to get dependent. If you already use sleeping meds, look into a sleep stack instead.

Finally, for days when you just gotta be on your A-game and you had trouble sleeping and you feel tired, either talk to your doctor about Modafinil, or just order some Adrafinil online. I recommend Modafinil, as Adrafinil is metabolized into Modafinil in your liver anyway, and Adrafinil can cause liver damage over time. Modafinil has virtually no side effects. It's safe. However, Adrafinil does not require a prescription and can be ordered online. Yea it makes no sense why the safer one would require a prescription.

TL;DR: 1. See if you have sleep apnea (if so go to a doctor and get it diagnosed). 2. If you snore or have sleep apnea, sleep on your side and see if Nasonex would help. 3. Quit smoking and drinking. 4. If you have trouble falling asleep, get melatonin at least and look into sleep stacks. 5. To feel more awake the next day, look into Modafinil/Adrafinil
