ELI5: The political spectrum in regards to the U.S.

Conservative - I love the 1950s. Good manufacturing jobs. Men were men, and women were ... well let us not dwell on such things. Wouldn't it be nice to go back to those times? Reinstating traditional Christian values and not wasting money on the poor/minorities will get us there. Also, get rid of taxes on job creating businesses. And if we're threatened, war!

Neoconservative - I agree with that guy basically but I'm not so into nostalgia. Free-market capitalism is best, with tax cuts for job-creating businesses to keep them happy. Also, gotta go shoot the terrorists before they come shoot us!

Libertarian - Government bad! Freedom good! Wars generally bad! Give individuals as much freedom as humanly possible and we'll be fine. I'm "economically conservative" but "socially liberal". Gay? Who cares! Start a government-funded program to help gay teens? No, government bad!

Liberal - Government is necessary to keep us free from the tyranny of big business monopolies! Government must work tirelessly to ensure an equal playing field for all (and must tax the people to do so). Things will not take care of themselves, we need laws, policies, programs, institutions, and even the government takeover/breakup of certain industries sometimes, to ensure that everyone can be safe and happy. A government-funded program to help gay teens? Yes! A program to help the poor? Yes! Gays, minorities, women, etc are awesome and we should spend money to protect their civil rights. Also war is generally bad but sometimes necessary.

Independent - Can't we just have a reasonable bunch of lawmakers, who can see right from wrong without relying on one of these all-or-nothing philosophies? No? Well then I'll just vote for whichever one seems less evil.
