Eliza Dushku says she was molested during the production of "True Lies" by the stunt coordinator, a guy who still works in Hollywood and most recently did the stunts for "Blade Runner 2049" and "Furious 7"

Yes, though be careful about characterizing people with various opinions, experiences, emotions, and approaches as being on one of two sides. There aren't simple, binary sides here. This certainly isn't competition. (Not just talking about a rapist and victim, I'm referring to everyone taking part in this conversation.) We're all trying to come to grips with a terrible reality. Next we need to figure out how to deal with it.

I definitely understand the inclination to want these criminal accusations to be handled as others are, but I think that there's enormous value in the discussions that are growing out of #metoo and similar movements. There have been a number of really talented, thoughtful feminist writers who've helped me grow beyond my limited, male understanding of the situation. I think that handling things clumsily, without care runs the risk of suppressing or alienating many people.

There are uncountable millions who've been raped, molested, harassed. There are similar numbers who's perpetrated those acts. There are far more who've never been in either position. For each of us, there are a constellation of issues and concerns. If we frame the issue as having two sides, that causes problems before we've even started talking. It suggests an adversarial relationship between people who may feel and believe very similar things.

Do I believe that Ms. Dushku is telling the truth? I have no idea. I can't fathom why she'd lie about this. I can't understand how or why Mr. Kramer would respond the way he did if he had done these things.

The above statements may elicit very different, very strong responses from people with different opinions or experiences. (My own ability to understand the situation has ZERO bearing on what actually happened. I may have opinions, but that's all they are. I wasn't there, and I can't know.) We need to find ways of communicating that don't preclude making progress.
