Empowered by tight race, young people are heading to the polls

Sounds a bit similar to what it was like for me. I'm not a resident of Canada and have lived out of country for almost a decade, however I'm still listed at my parent's address and my Driver's License has the same address on it as well. I voted while I was visiting home the other week (my hometown is full of elderly people and has been Conservative forever) and felt really discouraged from voting. Nothing illegal, mind you, but it was definitely in the air.

The woman who helped me register was the only person who helped me out but I think she was also the only person in the building within 20 years of my age, the majority being seniors well past retirement age. She brushed off the fact that I'm not technically a resident. The person at the front desk, on the other hand, was very discouraging when I asked whether someone with my status could vote. I think I got the luck of the draw as everyone else they had working there would have most likely shut me down on that alone (in which case I would've went to another polling station).

When I went to cast my vote, the old fogey in charge changed her tone the second I entered and wasn't a tenth as helpful towards me as she was to the last person who went through (another fogey). She explained everything to the previous person in detail but when I went through, I got a curt explanation followed by lots of cold shoulder. I wasn't sure what the procedure was for folding the ballot or inserting it into the envelope as she just sat there with her arms folded while I was left to my own devices. I ended up just copying the person across from me.

Again, nothing illegal, but you can tell at a glance that I'm not voting Conservative so I got lots of bad vibes. The last time I voted was in an NDP stronghold in the city and the experience was pretty much the exact opposite.

I wish more young people worked at these places. This shit is bound to happen when age is a major determining factor in what party one votes for.
