Experient world builders what tips do you have to start a world from zero?

In my experience, starting with a world unifying concept has been extremely useful. From a plot perspective, and simple world construction.

By "world unifying concept", I mean one "thing" in your world that has some form of relationship or significant effect on just about every creature, place, language, trade, kingdom etc. Then, If you're ever stuck on what to do next, just ask yourself how this unifying concept plays into this part of your world.

To use my own work as a short example, the unifying concept is an evil forest. The Wikk.

The entire world that is my canvas is surrounded on all sides by this forest. Nothing can go into the Wikk, and rarely does anything come out.

The point is, very little of the plot revolves specifically on this forest, but the Wikk plays a role in the motivation of many characters and its presence is always felt in the shadows of the story.

Try starting with a plot device that may connect everything, and see where it takes you. It certainly helps me.
