For the love of Christ, please stop saying "tow the line."

No - the meaning is not obvious. If you tell someone to tow a line and they pull a rope and then you say it is obvious that you meant them to stand somewhere, you suck at precise language. People need to be clear, concise and accurate or problems in communication develop. In some contexts and situations, no big deal. No harm no fowl or any other type of animal. But basically... illiterate people get ruffled when they reveal their ignorance and they want to just hand wave it away instead of learning to communicate well. But it's never wrong to be correct and precise, so stop making excuses for stupidity. Just admit it... bad language use is bad when it could be good.
