French woman pours tea to a British soldier during the fighting in Normandy, 1944.

June 2006, an intense fire fight breaks out across a river deep in the grove of an area just north of Baghdad. The enemy advances across the river and tries to flank us but we were waiting. So the 10 minute fight fight turns into an hour long hunt. I had my team on the side of a hut. The hut was filled with animals. We took sniper fight from across the river again and RPK/PKM and IRLs from the north. They had crossed again... we were stuck in position, even after killing 4 of them. The rounds constantly peppered the entire area. Out of no where, where comes an Iraqi man and wife. Low crawling with a platter of vegetables, Bread and tea. Something that still hits me in the feels to this day. "the brotherhood" had already been coming to their farm to steal the cattle before but this time. we were there to end that shit. THe gentleman who was holding a giant bag of sugar and a platter of glass cups told us they have his daughter...or had. They let us know they appreciated us stopping them. It was beyond belief. There were hundreds upon hundreds of rounds descending on us from the elevated grove and houses across the river.
