Newland’s family sit in shock.

Her family sob in devastation. She had to be carried out of the dock by dock officers. 12:24 Jonathan Humphries "Callous breach of trust"
He is reminding the court of the break down in the relationship. Newland later apologised to the victim.
“You apologised because the game was up, and your cruel deception had been discovered.” He reminds the court that another woman, Cornelia Chin, was deceived by the victim to believing she was talking to a man online. He says he is quite sure the impact on the victim will be “severe and long lasting.” Judge Dutton discussed the psychiatric and pre-sentence reports.
He says: “Your history of low self esteem and blurred gender lines is important, you painted a very troubling picture. While there is no hospital report recommended, it is important your conditions are monitored.” He says he cannot give her any credit for accepting responsibility.
Judge Dutton refers to Mr Power’s suggestion that the case is unusual enough for him to depart from the sentencing guidelines. He says he is convinced the victim was vulnerable, and that the offence is placed “firmly in category 2” Judge Dutton: “Your behaviour amounted to a callous breach of the trust your friend had in you.”
However he says the trust will not be an aggravating feature. He says the deception was lengthy and complex 12:17 Jonathan Humphries "Cruel and wicked deception"
Judge Dutton: “You made regular excuses as to why you couldn’t meet in the flesh. This involved a complex story of an injury.”
He reminds Newland that she convinced the victim to quit her job.
“Judge Dutton: “You gave her a ring to wear, taking this wicked and cruel deception to a higher level still.”
He says she acquired the prosthetic penis and deceived the victim to maker her think she was having sex with a man.
“You were so convincing in your cruel deception of her she thought she had finally found a man she could love and be with.”
He says Newland acted for her own “sexual gratification” and ignored the “devastating” impact on the victim
