Gear up or down for a water landing?

The beach has good trailer access.

I don't believe this is a factor unless the beach itself is big enough and flat enough to land on. You're not going to economically rebuild a glider that you have to fish out of the bottom of a lake, so the option of recovering it on a trailer doesn't factor into it.

If you can crash-land into shallow water on a shallow beach slope, that seems like a good option, because compared to landing on deep water you have chance to avoid drowning even if you break your arms and legs during the landing. Swimming to stay afloat with broken limbs doesn't sound like a good time to me (especially since you may be knocked out for that critical timeperiod).
