George Bush sneaks Michelle Obama a piece of candy at his father's funeral

That's a great question. I remember being in junior high during the 2000 election and my parents (mom is a Democrat, dad is a Republican) had a results party (mix of D and R family friends) and it was so fun and exciting to watch. I don't think the same group of people would have had the same fun during the election night in 2016, even if we adjust for the older-age grumpiness factor.

How did it get so bad?

It feels like the powerful people in our country have a vested interest in pitting Republicans against Democrats in a way that degrades the "other" side to disguise the virtual meaninglessness of which party is in power and to prevent the rise of third party or, better yet, non-party candidates from chipping into the two-party monopoly on the U.S. government, a monopoly that is funded and controlled by the richest and most influential private citizens.

Or maybe I'm just latching onto conspiracy to explain my disconnect from American politics?
