Germany Breaks A Solar Record — Gets 85% Of Electricity From Renewables

First of all, obviously renewables are not necessarily as economical as burning coal (even though wind energy is often cheaper than any other source of energy). The point of renewable energy is not to save money in the short term. Even though renewable energy is getting to the point where it actually often is the cheapest and most economical choice. But yes, Germany paid a lot for renewable energy at a point where it was nowhere close to cost-efficient (but did help the development of better solar panels etc.)

Secondly, Germany is not a very sunny place at all. It's also not particularly windy in the South. If a country like Great Britain had as many wind turbines as Germany, they could run their entire country with that energy (if you disregard the energy storage issue).

Thirdly, the median wealth of Germans is pretty comparable to the median wealth of US Americans (slightly higher in Germany). Also, Germany is a country that was completely bombed to shit 70 years ago, there are basically no natural resources in Germany and so on. Meanwhile a country as rich as the US, with oil, gas, gold, huge amounts of land etc. doesn't offer their citizens a better life than Germans.

take your current salary, reduce it by a conservative 20% for salary adjustment, then take even just a conservative 40% off of that for income and sales taxes, and then you can imagine paying 4x your current electric bill

Then pay half as much for your health care, be 10 times less likely to be in prison, be 5 times more likely to get murdered, have way less free time, die sooner, consume more oil, ruin the climate, but, yeah, you're gonna get more money.
