They may have won the popular vote like you said. But they can only do that because they have no competition on the right. Labour/lib dems and Green party are screwing each other over because votes are being shared between them. Tories do not have this problem, the only slight competition they have on the right is Brexit party but they are basically irrelevant.

Labour and Lib dems politically are similar and if they joined, the tories wouldn't have a chance. The majority of the country is left leaning, they just can't decide which left leaning party to vote for
