Google to pay 40 states $392M in location-tracking settlement

392 million is nothing considering how much money they are generating from it. This hush money is hysterical and I’m still amazed by how illiterate the government legislators when it comes to identifying how these tech companies “milk” the data usage. For starters, Alphabet (google’s mom) generates 175 billions annually and 80% of the revenue comes from advertising only. They don’t prioritize to store, personalize or manipulate the data (which they also do that for different purposes) but they are simply after behavioral insights so they can incrementally raise their revenue on advertising. On top of that, these settlements justify their actions on a level where they can continually build up their ecosystems which kicks new paradigm shifts and we will no longer argue about data privacy. The services they provide for “free” are essentials (such as google map, docs etc) so the trade off seems “fair” from their end but the truth of the matter is your benefit of those applications are functional whereas their benefit is influential, monopolistic, and transformational. The more the society is dependent on such “free” services and products, the regulators, legislators should educate themselves more how to establish a completely reformed tax system on these new concepts of “products and services” otherwise, they will be delighted to “settle” and milk the more of outdated system.
