Got bored - Decided to think of ways to spice up the boss encounters so they aren't pure bullet sponges

What is fun, anyway?

Anyway, metaphysical questions aside, no, that's not what I mean. I don't mean we should remove all cover, obstacles, etc. and take bullets to the face. I'm not saying Destiny should be dodge ball. That's not fun.

What I am saying is, these boss fights are all flawed in the sense that the optimal strategy is a variant of hide and shoot, except there is usually only one or two places to hide, and the Player is 1) never flushed from cover, 2) lead to tedious, boring encounters (like shooting through a wall to down Valus with an armor-piercing sniper or waiting for your Icebreaker to respawn ammo, lol), and 3) most importantly, are not fun.

Contrast this with, let's say, Prison of Elders. Now, there are still places to hide, but 1) you can be flushed from these positions, 2) there are other "good" places to hide, and 3) more fun. More fun because sub-optimal strategies work (like doing laps around Skolas) and do not overly punish a fireteam (like the Sekrion fight with void damage - holy shit is that not fun).

Fights don't need to be ultra challenging - I get that. Boss fights have become chores. Shoot, I admit to using them, too. But it's not like PLAYERS invented those spots. They were all PUT there. Considering the penalties for losing can be quite high (Nightfall), it's only rational that Players take the path of greatest safety when fighting bosses. All the cheese spots take away almost any semblance of challenge...adversity...that it becomes as mindless as a slot machine (the Phogoth fight, in particular, should be taught in every Video Games 101 fight as what NOT to do when designing a boss fight.)
