Why hasn't the world had a modern revolution yet?

Direct democracy is an awful idea. Have you met people?

Joking aside, there are many things that governments deal with that require expertise most people do not have. We need, e.g., scientifically educated people making policy decisions about scientific matters. Clearly, most governments don’t have appropriate experts dealing with relevant issues, but direct democracy would be even worse than the status quo.

The needed revolution we need is a new renaissance wherein people respect intellectual rigour and expertise. Too many people think their ignorant opinions are worth the same as an expert’s (e.g. climate policy). A representative democracy with appropriate experts in appropriate places is what is ideal.
