[Help] Any tips or advice for someone who is allergic to dogs that shed but wants to own a non-hypoallergenic dog one day?

You need to talk to your doctor about how bad your allergies are, especially if you have other chronic respiratory illnesses such as asthma. You may be able to just pop a couple pills daily at best, or you may find these dogs are completely out of reach for you at worst.

Things that have helped me in the past: vacuuming daily with a vacuum that uses a HEPA filters; bathing the dog once a week; wearing a dust mask around the dog on really bad days; brushing the dog out before they come in from any excursion outside, no matter how short (wear the mask while brushing!); feeding a high quality food; wiping the entire dog down with a few baby wipes after outdoor excursions and brushing; washing my hands after handling the dog; not allowing the dog to lick me; not allowing the dog on the bed or in my bedroom; taking an anti-histamine and a longer-acting allergy med; getting allergy shots; having a smaller dog that sheds.

It's a pain in the ass but dogs are the best thing in the universe so it's okay. ;)

You might find a smaller dog that's non-hypoallergenic may work for you. For example, while you might struggle around a husky, perhaps a pomeranian would be okay. And sometimes it depends on the individual dog, too. My friend has two border collies. One of them makes me itch and cough. The other one? I could stick my face right into that fur and the only result would be one very weirded out collie.

If you have to go with more hypoallergenic dogs, there are TONS of great breeds out there that are better for allergy sufferers. A lot of the terrier breeds, for example, shed very lightly. Poodles come in three different sizes and, if you can handle their sensitivity, are wonderful dogs. Of course you also have the companion breeds like bichons, maltese, havanese, cotons, cresteds, etc.
