Throwaway because it really creeped me out and also.. embarrassed and never told anyone. So, I started talking online with this girl years and years ago on the early and excitingly prime days of MySpace. Back then, adding someone based on location and “orientation” was obviously quite exciting to a newly-single lesbian looking for someone to relate and talk to. I had just gotten out of a toxic and abusive relationship a few months prior and I honestly was pretty lonely. Enter same-age, college gal living only an hour away. We began chatting (texting), and she’d send me pics (nothing dirty), and I’d send back. Never could talk on the phone though. This went on for a month or so, when she suggest coming and picking me up from a coffee shop I frequent, and taking me back to her place to hang for the weekend. I said I wasn’t sure. We hadn’t talked on the phone, hadn’t met in real life, and I wanted to at least talk on the phone and meet irl before i would consider that. She says “I’ll call you, but you can’t answer.. I’ll leave you a voicemail so you can hear what I sound like”. Hmm. Weird but okay. Weird would be an understatement when I heard what sounded like a guy making his voice sound like a 4 year old kid with a redneck accent. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I went cold. Pulled up all the pics “she” sent, looking for something “off”, and noticed a 20’s something guy in most of the backgrounds of the photos, looking straight at the camera like a straight psychopath. Changed my number and stayed off there for a bit after that!
