How much do you actually LIKE your engineering job?

So I guess I would say all of my jobs have not been dry. Not dry to me was being on the plant floor when I was younger. Now it’s designing the systems that we put in our plants. It’s being close to the bottom line. I guess that’s why I like manufacturing. I like to be hands on. It was hard for me when I left the plants and had to sit all day. But I can still get back whenever I want/need to. I do a lot of discrete event simulation these days. It would be pretty dry if I did that in a vacuum. But luckily I don’t. We get a lot of involvement from the plants so it’s pretty cool. That’s just how I see it. I guess It depends on which discipline you’re in and what you like. I’ve got friends in Mining and Mechanical that got their degrees and then never worked as an Engineer. Now they specifically recruit Engineers for non-engineering jobs. The most successful went with a start up a few years ago…But success means different things to different people. Civil actually looks good these days because construction interests me. In fact, a couple of my co-workers started out in Civil. All I know is that a VT Engineering degree will open up doors. You’ll be able to learn to do whatever you want to do. But my son’s taking the medical route so my advice is to do what you like because you’ll be doing it for a long time. Good luck.
