In Ramadaan we try to do pack meal packs for ppl. We budget for R125 a pack that could last a family for a few days at least. Was comprised of 1kg rice, 5kg mielie meal, 1kg flour, 500g pasta, 500g spaghetti, 100 teabags, 750ml oil, few different kinds of stock cubes and soup mixes and I can’t rem what else or if that was all. And I know that’s not exactly a meal but we wanted to provide just the basics and make as many packs and possible. No breakfast items. We carefully budgeted and chose cheaper non brand items and went to a local grocer and shoprite. It might be possible that low income families can survive on +/-R1000 pm groceries. But that excludes a lot of things and would be to the bone minimum.
