How do you rate movies

Late addition, but I felt this was a good space to express my ratings. Number ratings are arbitrary, but they are a great summation of how I feel about a movie. I rate from the 1-10 scale, 10 being brilliant and 1 being MAKE IT STOP. I'll break it down:

  • 1 - Every aspect of filmmaking is irredeemable, from acting to score, cinematography to pacing (ex. The Gallows, Yoga Hosers, Foodfight!)

  • 2 - The same vein as 1s, but has a sense of competency throughout or in a few moments (Suicide Squad, Jem and the Holograms, Sucker Punch)

  • 3 - Often a sloppy mess, but the worst parts aren't on the surface so it's tolerable (The Boondock Saints, Warcraft, After Earth)

  • 4 - One or two flaws away from being average, but becomes the worst side of mediocrity (Sausage Party, Ghostbusters 2016, Pacific Rim)

  • 5 - Gives you exactly what it advertises, and is nothing special in terms of flaws or successes (The Angry Birds Movie, Watchmen, Transformers)

  • 6 - Stands out amongst the average with a few noteworthy achievements (Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, The Avengers, Only God Forgives)

  • 7 - A fair share of flaws, but the positives outweigh them by a good margin (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Frozen, Interstellar)

  • 8 - Very well made, but could use some work on a few aspects (Zootopia, Drive, Jurassic Park)

  • 9 - Literally one or two things stopping it from being perfect but is undoubtedly excellent (Anomalisa, Inside Llewyn Davis, 12 Years a Slave)

  • 10 - A masterpiece where everything involved in the filmmaking process works with the most minute fault or none at all (Gone Girl, Her, Do the Right Thing)

On rare occasions, two to be exact, I'll rate something a 0 when it's a technical and narrative disaster, but gets on a level of near personal insult. Those were Movie 43 and Nina. Also, not everything in the 8 or 10 range I can call my favorites. There's some in the lower tier that I enjoy watching. Most so-bad-it's-good fare ends up in the 3 range.
