One thing I did with my cat, which has turned him into an overly friendly, walk into my neighbors houses cat, is training him to be a “hold-able”. Male cats like to rub their face/chin on things to mark it with their scent. So pick him up, even if he hates being held, and direct him towards something intriguing to him on any wall like a screw or picture frame, or even a thermostat. You want to get him to smell it and rub his face on it. If he does it at least once, you can keep doing it, letting him run on everything. Pace yourself. At first go quickly from one thing to the next, then start taking it slowly. Do this every day until he’s okay with being held.
