If you could ask your future self one question what would it be?

Look, I know this is the internet and particularly in youth watering holes like Reddit nothing is supposed to be taken seriously -- I get that. And when someone does take something seriously, it can be tedious for those who are just making a passing joke to be inundated with accusations, but if you've ever been bullied in real life that is pretty much an equivalent scenario; just a passing remark made in jest that can have a more profound impact than you are intending.

If this was in reply to a light-hearted and/or not serious comment, than the tone is set and, although it can still display a lack of compassion and the presence of prejudice, it would be less reprehensible than this.

Instead, the comment, not by you I understand, was made in response to someone saying they wonder how transition, as difficult and serious an obstacle as most trans people could face, turned out. In response to that very personal question, this person made a joke that, whether you find it funny or not, demeans, mocks, chastises and negates the lived experience of another person.

OP opened up to something they were experiencing and Reddit seemed more eager to applaud the other poster for mocking that person. Can you understand how that might reflect on what they go through outside of the realm of the internet? How perhaps that same kind of mocking and demeaning attitude is something they are used to encountering? How others who are going through something similar would look at that and realize that a lot of people think what their identity and their reality is a joke and something to be ridiculed?

That is why it is bullying -- and though you might not care, those of us who do not adhere to sexual and gender norms have probably experienced it plenty growing up, so it might be nice if as adults we can all have at least an ounce of consideration for others.
