If I’m a college student with no credit, would it be smart to get a credit card to build credit and only use it for my $5/month Spotify subscription?

No. I was not irresponsible. My advice is based on decades of experience. It’s not a popular one I understand, but it’s from my own experience and from seeing friends and people around me affected by lots of credit card bills. Seeing what they are going through is hard. I think there’s a general lack of education about debt. We are a country of debts. I don’t want to see OP just going to college and thinking about starting a credit card. You can spend all the cash you want but you won’t be dealing with debt collector and messed up fico scores. It’ hard to start saving when you have a huge debt. It has unforeseen ripple effect. My perspective is not just for right now, I think 10, 20 years down the line. Again, this is my own perspective. You don’t have to agree.
